To the eternal frustration of parents, teachers, and any other adult whose responsibility it was to watch over me and keep my attention, I have had a vibrant imagination and wandering mind since childhood. The ability to be so engrossed in my own thoughts often earned me labels like “absent-minded” and “space cadet,” and characterizations such as these only reinforced my natural inclination to keep my thoughts to myself. It wasn’t until adulthood that I allowed myself to acknowledge that the wild adventures and rich internal dialogues that I’d spent a lifetime squirreling away in my mind were stories that might be worth sharing out loud.
